The Washington Wizards are based in Washington, D.C. and were founded in 1961 and play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The franchise holds one NBA Championship title from 1978, along with four conference titles and seven division titles. The franchise has changed names and locations a number of times over the years. Starting as the Chicago Packers, the next season they were the Zephyrs. They moved to Baltimore the next season becoming the Baltimore Bullets.

The franchise did not make it to the playoffs for nearly a decade after the 1987-88 season. With a name change from the Bullets to the Wizards in 1995, the team began a decline. Chris Webber was a strong force in scoring and rebounding. In 2001, Michael Jordan came out of retirement to join the team and gave them an 18-win improvement though he was injured for much of the first year. Jordan had been part-owner and team president as well, until the majority owner removed him from both positions.
In 2004-05 the team saw their greatest regular season in 26 years, 45-27, making the playoffs for the first time as the Wizards.
