The franchise of the Sacramento Kings started off in Rochester, NY as players of the National Basketball League in 1945. The franchise's first win as the Rochester Royals came after they moved to the Basketball Association of America, which was absorbed into the NBA in 1949. The team has moved a few times, from Rochester to Cincinnati in 1957, and again to their current location of Sacramento, California in 1985. It wasn't until the late 90s that the Kings rose out of mediocrity by making some changes to the lineup. From coaches to players, the changes to the team led to their becoming one of the most fun to watch teams in the NBA, as well as being more successful.

The team even ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated in February of 2001, titled as "The Greatest Show on Court." That year saw the addition of point guard Mike Bibby, seeking stability and control at his position. The team then had their best season, finishing 61-21 and pushing through two rounds of the playoffs. The 2001-02 series is considered to be one of the best of NBA playoff history.
