The team had a dream season in 1966-67, with the best record the league had ever seen before that time. The Sixers advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, and played the aging Celtics, beating them in five games. With their first NBA Championship, the Sixers knocked the Celtic's out of their eight-year reign as NBA champions. The 76ers were voted the best team in league history by the NBA.

Though the team saw its ups and downs over the next few years, its lowest point came in the 1972-73 season with a 9-73 record, and those 73 losses remain the lowest mark for any NBA franchise in history. They once held the records for both most wins and most losses in a season.

Julius "Dr. J." Erving was taken on board in 1976-77 from the New York Nets, who helped the team once again defeat their rival, The Celtics, and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. The foes would meet many times, commonly in the finals, leaving the Sixers just short of the win.

It wasn't until the 1982-83 season that the Sixers reclaimed that championship victory, largely due to the addition of Moses Malone and Hall of Famer Erving. The team swept the Championship against the Los Angeles Lakers in four games.
