The Oklahoma City Thunder is the newest team to join the NBA. The team was formerly the Seattle Supersonics, founded in 1967. The Thunder play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. The team is Oklahoma City's first pro-sports franchise. With one NBA Championship under their belt (as the Sonics) from 1979, three conference and six division titles over the years, the team had the best record of the NBA in 1994. The Thunder and the Sonics have agreed to "share" their team history.

Bennett paid $45 million to Seattle for prematurely breaking the team's lease for Key Arena. The Thunder played their first official game as the such on October 8, 2008 in a preseason loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team's star Kevin Durant took and made the first shot of the new franchises history.
As the Sonics, the Thunder saw an 11-year winning season streak come to an end in the 2002-03 season, when Gary Payton was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. The next season led to the team's sixth and final division title to date, with 52 wins.
