The New York Knicks, founded in 1946, are one of two teams from the original National Basketball Association that are still in the city they started in. Thanks to luck of the draw, the Knicks got the number one pick Patrick Ewing of Georgetown University after the 1984-85 season. They were entered into the very first NBA Draft Lottery, and Ewing went on to become Rookie of the Year.

However, as the Knicks stand today, they hold the distinction of being viewed as one of the worst-run franchises in pro-sports. This is likely due to poor trades, and the fact that the team has the highest payroll in the NBA, $130 million, even they rank among the lowest.
December 16, 2006 marked one of the lowest points of the franchises' history. At Madison Square Garden, the Denver Nuggets faced the Knicks on home ground, literally. When Knicks guard Mardy Collins made a hard foul, the matter escalated through shoving to two players throwing punches at each other, spilling over into the stands.
Once this altercation was diffused, Nuggets player Carmelo Anthony punched Collins, quickly running off after. All players involved had severe suspensions, Anthony for 15 games.
