The New Orleans Hornets relocated to play in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina's damage to their home city. The franchise was founded in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets, moving to New Orleans in 2002. The team plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. They have yet to win a conference or division title, and no NBA Championships.

The team was formed during the 1987 NBA expansion and joined the league along with Miami. After ownership demanded that the city of Charlotte build the team a new stadium without the team having to pay anything or they would leave, the city turned them down. Forced out of Charlotte, choosing New Orleans was a risk as well. The city had fewer season ticket holders and attendance in Charlotte had been at the top of the NBA's records for most of the team's history.

Once the team got to New Orleans, they played the first regular season NBA game the city had seen in 23 years. Player Chris Paul was named Rookie of the Year by a landslide, and the team sold out half of their games in Oklahoma, as well as all three games played in New Orleans selling out.
