The winners of the semifinals proceed to the NBA Conference Finals. Each conference's winner goes on to the NBA Finals. Each round of the playoffs is a best-of-seven series, which used to be a best of five. The first two games and the last two games in the NBA Finals are played at the court of the team that holds home court advantage.
Since 1984, after many years of adjustments, the tournament arrived at its current 16-team format. It wasn't until 2003, however, that the first round changed from a best of five to a best-of-seven series. The divisions were realigned in 2005 when a 30th franchise was added. Each conference now has three divisions, and the top team in each division after the regular season was awarded a top-three playoff seed. In the 2005-06 season, winners were no longer guaranteed a top-three, and are also not guaranteed home-court advantage. Only two 8th seeded teams have ever won a series against a number one seed: The Denver Nuggets and the Seattle Supersonics.
