The Eastern and Western Conferences each send the team that has won their Conference. Since the first start of the game in 1947, the game has taken place each June at the end of the NBA season. The Miami Heat won the 2006 NBA Finals over the Dallas Maverics, 4-2. It was the debut appearance in the finals for both teams. The winner of the Finals receives the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

The Boston Celtics dominated the Finals for all but two years between 1957 and 1969, even running an eight-game winning streak. They hold 16 championships, more than any other NBA team. The Los Angeles Lakers are also a powerhouse in the Finals, with 14 championships to their credit, and the Chicago Bulls hold six wins. During the 2000 NBA Finals, the Lakers faced off against the Pacers, and when the Lakers won, fans filled the streets of Los Angeles, in their excitement a riot started and bonfires ensued, cars and even a news van were flipped over. The NBA Finals are considered a "World Championship," though only US teams compete for the title. Canada joined in 1995.
