Superstar Kevin Garnett was responsible for much of the Timberwolves success, however he was traded to the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics before the 2007-2008 season started. The 11-time NBA All-Star was responsible for every effort that the team made to become playoff contenders. The highlight of those years came after the Wolves were the team everyone wanted to beat in the 2003-04 season. They finished as top seed and making it to the conference finals and falling to the Lakers.

Kevin Garnett was named Most Valuable Player after coming in close years previous. The next year they would miss the playoffs for the first time in eight years. They have yet to return since the 2003 season. The team has an emerging star lineup in Rickey Davis, Mike James and Garnett going into the 2007 season. Comparisons have been drawn between the players and the trio that led the Wolves to the finals in the 2004 season. The addition of Craig Smith and Randy Foye, two promising rookie players, may take the Wolves back to the finals.

The Timberwolves celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2008 and used the occasion to unveil a new logo and uniforms. The Timberwolves are still adjusting to life without Garnett, but have a number of talented players who look to bring the Timberwolves back to contender status.
