The Miami Heat, 2006 NBA Champions, were founded in 1988 during the boom of the NBA. They first made the playoffs in 1991, but lost to the best of the league at the time, the Chicago Bulls. The teams would meet again in 1995 and see the same fate.

In 1998 the team captured their second Atlantic Division title in a row, after celebrating 10 years in the biz. After a great season in 2004, when the Heat got center Shaquille O'Neal in a trade with the Lakers, the team was reworked considerably. It had the biggest trade in the history of the NBA, involving five teams and 13 players.
The Heat were 2006 NBA Champions, winning for the first time in the history of the franchise. In the first round, the team met with the Bulls again, this time eliminating them from the playoffs. The Heat went on to sweep the Nets out for the second year in a row, and moved on to their second Eastern Conference Final in a row.
