The team has never won an NBA Championship, conference or division title in its history. Originally the Vancouver Grizzlies, they were one of two teams to play in Canada since the Toronto Huskies in 1946.

The team was formed as an NBA expansion team, and chose its players the first year from other teams. As the team was new and had never played with one another, the Grizzlies ended the season with the worst win/loss record in the entire NBA in 1995-96. The team lost 23 games in a row from February through April. This set a record that the Denver Nuggets have since met as well.

After the NBA lockout, Grizzlies game attendance rates lowered, and the owners started losing money. The team moved to Memphis in 2001. That year their third overall pick won Rookie of the Year, Pau Gasol. Jerry West became general manager in 2002, becoming NBA Executive of the Year in 2003-04.

The team progressed to the playoffs for the first time in team history in 2004, as sixth seed. They did it again in 2004-05, but were twice swept in the first round. The team holds the record for the longest playoffs losing streak in the NBA, with 12 losses. The Grizzlies in three years never won a single playoff game or series.
