At the end of the 2006 season, the Lakers had more wins than any other team, with the highest winning percentage as well. They had more finals appearances, and placed second for total championships than any other franchise. The team also has the longest consecutive winning streak in the history of US professional team sports, missing the playoff only five times.

With a record like that, holding 14 championships, 29 conference titles and 28 division titles, the Lakers are the team to beat. Such notable players as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, a former Lakers player as a coach, Pat Riley, all formed a dominating presence in the NBA over the years. Their success and proximity to Hollywood has lent the team a long list of A-list star fans. Jack Nicholson is noted for his season ticket holding status since 1967. The list of A-list ticket holders is as long as the Lakers championship series.

When the NBA listed the 50 best players in NBA history, in 1997 eight of them had played either a significant portion if not all of their career with the Lakers. Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and James Worthy in addition to the aforementioned, worked to create a team to go down in NBA history.

The 21st century has been marked by Kobe Bryant and for a while Shaquile O'Neil. The duo was a devastating combo that led the Lakers to a three-peat as NBA champions before Shaq left for Miami and later Phoenix. The historic Laker-Celtics rivalry was revived in the 2008 Finals, which saw the Celtics go on the win it all.
