Today playing in the Conseco Fieldhouse, they once played in the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum before moving to their 25-year home of the Market Square Arena. They began in the American Basketball Association, winning three championships in four years, as one of the most successful teams in the league's history. They were in the ABA finals five times out of the eight years the league existed.

When the ABA was absorbed by the NBA in 1976, the Pacers were invited to join. Monetarily, they were at the bottom of the rung. They even held a city-wide telethon to keep from folding their first season. To gain attention they offered a women's basketball star in 1979, Ann Meyers, to train with the team. She was the very first, and only, woman to try out for the NBA. She never made it onto the final team.

It wasn't until 1980-81 that the Pacers made it to the NBA Playoffs, and it would be their only appearance between '77 and '87. The addition of Reggie Miller in 1987 to the team gave the Pacers the boost they needed to start moving in the right direction. The Pacers made it to the playoffs a number of times, falling to the Celtics two years in a row, in 1991 and 1992. Though they returned to playoffs a number of times, winning their conference in 2000 and their division four times, they would never win an NBA Championship.
