The Houston Rockets were founded in 1967, and play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. The franchise secured two NBA Championships two years in a row, winning in both 1994 and 1995. They hold four conference and division titles as well.

The name made sense in their new home, as the Johnson Space Center and Mission Control are housed in Houston. Fan support was weak, however, as the town was filled with baseball and football fans.
In 1981 a third team came to Texas, which caused a restructuring of the NBA's conferences. The Rockets were moved to Midwest Division of the Western Conference. Though the team saw a league worst record the next year of 14-68, it is said that some of the losses were intentional, so the Rockets would have a better chance at the number one draft pick. This would be the last coin-flip season to prevent just such behavior.
Their Championship winning streak took the team up against the Knicks and the Magic, beating both in 1994 and 1995 respectively. The team's win against the Orlando Magic would be the first time a sixth seed would win the Championship.
