When the ABA folded in 1976, the Nuggets joined the NBA along with the New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers. They won division titles their first two seasons, but had less success in the post-season. In the 1980s the new coaching style of Doug Moe, the "run and gun" philosophy, helped the team gain a competitive edge. During the decade of the 80s, the team would commonly exceed 115 points a game.
When Moe left in 1990, this edge was lost. The team's new coach kept the same style, and the scoring continued, but didn't translate to wins unfortunately, as the team lead with the lowest number of wins for two seasons in a row. They tied for worst record in the 2002-03 season with the Cavaliers after a brief resurgence in 1997-98.
The addition of Carmelo Anthony in 2003-04 and a new uniform brought the team to a qualifying level. The Nuggets were the first team to qualify for the postseason after a sub-20-win campaign the year before. In 2005-06 the team won the Northwest Division title, their first in 18 years. The Nuggets added Allen Iverson in December of 2006, and he helped the Nuggets to their thid best record in since joining the NBA with 50 wins. The Iverson-Anthony due also scored 168 points in one game in March of 2008. This holds the record for the third highest points total in an NBA game. In the early part of the 2008-2009 season, Allen Iverson left the team for Detroit and hometown star Chauncey Billups was brought in.
