In just five years after their inception, the team made their first playoff appearance, with the best record in the division in 1975-76. It has been their only win since.
With the most explosive young star in the NBA in LeBron James, the Cavaliers have become a dominant team after years of mediocrity. Prior to James' arrival, the pinnacle of the team's success was in the 1991-92 season, when with a 57-25 record they went to the finals, but lost to the Bulls once again in the finals, like the close 1989 matchup between the two teams. After these high points, there was an era of decline for the team. Receiving the number one pick in the NBA in 2003-04, the team drafted LeBron James, and the team saw a turning point.
As a beginner, James proved himself quickly, earning Rookie of the Year his first season, and increasing his stats for the next year and helping form the core of the Cavs. They would see the playoffs again for the first time since 1997-98, progressing to the second round for the first time in 13 years. The Cavs had their best season in years in the 2006-2007 season. James led the Cavs past the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals, but they fell to the dominant Spurs in a NBA Finals sweep. In the 2007-2008 season, the Cavs once again reached the Eastern Conference Finals, where they held tough against the Boston Celtics. The eventual NBA Champion Celtics were able to stop the Cavs from reaching the NBA Finals in a bitter-fought seven-game series.
