They came to Charlotte after the city's last NBA team, The Charlotte Hornets, moved to New Orleans. The team had a sister team in the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA before the team folded in January of 2007.
The Bobcats have a brand-new stadium, named after them as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena, which was opened before the NBA season in 2005. The team is owned by one of the first prominent black owners, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, Robert L. Johnson. Michael Jordan is the second-largest shareholder, and rapper Nelly is also a minority co-owner.
As a new team, the Bobcats are still finessing their lineup. Starting with the expansion draft for their first season, the team ended up with UConn Huskies center Emeka Okafor who became the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2005. The team continues to try to build a strong, youthful foundation for success in the future. Their salary cap situation leans toward this being a possibility; however rumored financial troubles have swirled about recently.
