Within a decade the team would become a reigning force in the league, setting records that have not been broken to this day. Starting with their first NBA Championship in 1957, the Celtics have won 17 titles to date. While attaining these championships the team set the longest streak of consecutive championships in U.S. sports franchise in history. The Celtics lost the next year, but returned strong in '59 to win eight in a row.

This streak brought the Celtics against the Lakers six times, stirring a bitter and intense rivalry that some consider the most intense in the NBA. The two have played each other in the NBA finals four times, and in one decade the two dominated the league, with the Lakers winning five championships and the Celtics winning three. The rivalry cooled a bit when the Celtic's standing slipped, but has roared back with a vengeance after the 2008 NBA Finals clash.

Larry Bird is one of pro-basketball's most recognized names, and he helped make the Celtics what they became. Bird and his rival, Magic Johnson, were responsible for the growth of the NBA with their exceptional skills. The Celtics have retired more numbers than any other pro-sports franchise in North America, and broke their own record for best season turnaround in NBA history in 2007-2008. In the 1979-1980 season, they improved by 32 games, 61-21, while the 2007-2998 season saw them improve by 42 games with a 66-16 record.
