Their name has come under some transformation over the years, as the franchise started as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, becoming the Milwaukee Hawks in 1951, the St. Louis Hawks in 1955 before taking their current name in 1968 after a move to Georgia.

The team won its only NBA Championship in 1958, but holds 14 division titles and four conference titles as well. After a brief period of success, the team began years of rebuilding. The team reached the stature of being among the league's elite from 1985-89, winning over 50 games a season. But they would not get past the semifinals of the playoffs. A new coach in 1993 met a team record the next season of 57 wins.

Many Hawks fans have been lost over the years, as the team's failures in the playoffs began to get discouraging. Also, with the loss of Danny Manning after the 1993-94 season, without a superstar, ticket sales dropped along with interest in the team. Today the team is still hoping to rebound from other bad personnel changes. The team holds the record for the longest drought (22 years) of not drafting an All-Star.
